Back To School | flower mound family photographer

When thinking of back to school photos, I like to think of what our family does leading up to the first day of school to know what is important to photograph. We actually have a family tradition that started before my life as a mom, back when I was a high school math teacher. As you might imagine, the weekend before the first day of school was usually stressful for me trying to get ready for my new set of students. While you might think 'But, you had all summer to get ready!', in reality I didn't know what I was teaching until the week before school started which meant prep work was relatively minimal. Don't get me started. Anyhow, the point is, Brad and I would go out to eat the night before the first day of school so that way I could relax and have an hour of peace before the craziness continued. Thus, a tradition of dinner before the first day of school began and we continued this with the boys when they started pre-school.

Last year took in addition to our traditional dinner (which I didn't photograph because, you know, I can't photograph every minute of the day!), we had a morning treat of cupcakes at The Flour Shop Bakery in Highland Village the Sunday of the boys' last weekend of summer. Then the morning of John's first day of kindergarten I was sure to capture a little of him getting ready for school, a couple posed shots outside to document how handsome he is, and then a few shots of him at the school for the first time as a student. I did the same for the first day of Matthew's pre-k.  All of these memories are important to me as they truly show what it is means to go back to school in our family.

What traditions does your family have when you are ending the summer, or going back to school? Don't think that this only applies to families with young children. Surely families with college-aged kids have family traditions or some sort of send-off for before the fall semester starts. What would you photograph that best represents your family?

Documenting Our Days - 'Breakfast'

This week our family is on our 2nd annual beach trip. A group of  14 people in one house on the beach. Never a dull moment. Here is what our breakfast looks like on a day when the guys were out for an early morning game of disc golf.

Head over to Hannah's blog to see what her breakfast is like!

At 4:00 | flower mound photographer

The boys' playroom is one of my favorite places in my home. Sure, it is a perfect place to help corral the millions of toys they have and provide entertainment for the boys. And sure, this is where we have our 'magic couch' in which you want to fall asleep after sitting on it for less than 2 minutes. Most importantly though, is it has beautiful light in the afternoons which is perfect for photographing those crazy boys. We recently rearranged the playroom and I commented to my husband 'This is perfect!'. He said 'Yes, we can put a big TV across the couch now and watch movies in here.'. I said 'Noooo...the couch is in the perfect spot for the pretty light!' Ah, the joys of being married to someone on the verge of being obsessed with light and photography.

Anywho, last week the boys were playing in the room AND the room was relatively clean. Both make for a perfect reason for me to grab the camera and start shooting. Plus, this totally fits into the tips I shared on Ways to Document Your Life Through Photography. Thomas was practicing his speech with the train toy, we pulled out the remote to get a couple of us in the frame together, the boys read a magazine, and Thomas eventually found my phone sitting out and couldn't resist its temptation. Here is our life 'At 4:00'.

Underwater Photos | flower mound children photographer

For Mother's Day, we bought my mom a new camera. The Sony RX100 to be exact. About two weeks ago I convinced her to buy the underwater housing so we can play with underwater photos. All I had to do was show my dad photos from Liz LaBianca to see we could do with underwater photography and he said without hesitation 'Buy it'. A couple days later I was in the pool donning goggles and trying my hand at underwater photography. It is certainly not easy, but these photos aren't too shabby for my first time! It goes without saying that I still have a love for black and white photos even underwater. Now if I figure out a way to get my hands on the camera more often, I can work on these fun type of photos...
